The dosage and frequency of administration of SYNTHROID® is determined by the indication, and must in every case be individualized according to patient response and laboratory findings. Levothyroxine sodium products from different manufacturers should not be used interchangeably unless retesting of the patient and re-titration of the dosage, as necessary, accompanies the product switch

  • In younger, healthy adults, the usual full replacement dose of SYNTHROID® is approximately 1.7 mcg/kg once daily.
  • Dosing will be influenced by factors such as age, weight, the type of thyroid condition, presence of other illnesses and the severity and duration of hypothyroid symptoms.
  • It is recommended that SYNTHROID®. be taken at the same time every day, preferably one-half to one hour before breakfast. Food and drink can affect how your body absorbs SYNTHROID®.

Levothyroxine has a narrow therapeutic index. Regardless of the indication for use, careful dosage titration is necessary to avoid the consequences of over- or under- treatment. Many drugs interact with SYNTHROID® necessitating adjustments in dosing or monitoring of clinical or laboratory parameters to maintain therapeutic response.

Guidelines for Initial Dosing and Monitoring in Adults

**Depending on age, duration of hypothyroidism and cardiovascular risk factor

*For Congenital Hypothyroidism, the current guidelines recommend a 2 week monitoring interval at the beginning of therapy until normalization of TSH levels

†SYNTHROID is not available as a 12.5 mcg dosage form. A different product should be considered.
